Musculoskeletal Cancers
- Overview
From diagnosis to treatment to rehabilitation, the Musculoskeletal Tumor Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital brings together the talents of a first-class multidisciplinary team of physicians to offer patients the full spectrum of musculoskeletal tumor care.
Musculoskeletal tumors are rare, and it is important for patients to be treated by a special program dedicated to these diagnoses.
Our Team of Experts
In addition to their ROA doctor, our patients benefit from the expertise of a dedicated team of physicians specializing in musculoskeletal surgery, medical oncology, radiology, and pathology. The team members meet regularly in the Department of Radiation Oncology at INOVA Fairfax Hospital to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan for each patient.
Individualized Care
You are important to us. Our patients enjoy exceptional care with a personal guide through diagnosis and treatment. The clinical coordinator is a registered nurse who coordinates patient visits and diagnostic studies, ensuring a seamless process with maximum convenience and minimum stress for our patients. With a background in oncology, the coordinator is often a key source of information and guidance for patients as they proceed with their treatment and therapy. The compassionate care of our clinical coordinator is a hallmark feature that distinguishes the Inova program. (Meet our Clinical Coordinator, Amy Siegel)
Comprehensive Services
Inova Fairfax Hospital is the largest cancer center in the Washington D.C. Metropoliation area. The depth and breadth of services available ensures that patients have access to leading edge surgical and non-surgical techniques. These include expandable or “growing” endoprosthetics for children with bone tumors, clinical trials with innovative chemotherapy agents, and the newest computer-aided radiation therapy techniques. Our goal is to maximize the outcome and function of each patient through the use of advanced surgical and reconstructive techniques.
Radiation Techniques
ROA is proud to offer by far the most advanced array of radiation technologies in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. Our standard machines can perform high accuracy 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy (3DCRT) shaping the beams of radiation to conform to the shape of the target. With the support of Inova Fairfax Hospital our program has acquired the power of Tomotherapy® and Trilogy®. These are multi-million dollar treatment machines that any large university-based cancer center would be proud to offer, and many of them have one of these machines. We have both. This technology and our phenomenal department of five radiation physicists allow our doctors to go light years beyond what most programs can offer. For a more detailed description of the available technologies used in our Musculoskeletal Radiation Program please select from the list below.
- 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy (3DCRT)
- Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
- Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
- Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
- Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
- Respiratory-Gated Radiation Therapy (RGRT)
- Interstitial Brachytherapy
Your ROA doctor will discuss the optimal combination of radiation technologies for your case with you during your consultation.
