Dr. Sarah Gao joined Radiation Oncology Associates in 2022. Dr. Gao is trained in all aspects of radiation oncology, and her practice will focus on the treatment of head and neck, skin, lymphoma, breast and gynecologic malignancies.

Dr. Gao grew up in California and attended California State University, Los Angeles through the Early Entrance Program where she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biochemistry. She went on to receive her M.D. from Yale School of Medicine where she was a recipient of the Hirsch & Hsiung Fellowship for medical research. She completed radiation oncology residency at Yale and was selected as Chief Resident. Dr. Gao has expertise across a variety of treatment modalities including intensity modulated radiation therapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy, stereotactic body radiotherapy, proton therapy, gynecologic brachytherapy, total skin electron therapy, and orthovoltage therapy. During her training, Dr. Gao’s research endeavors have focused on utilizing data science to further personalize the treatment of cancer patients, and she has experience in creating and managing clinical databases, performing advanced statistical analyses, and building supervised machine learning models. She has given multiple oral presentations at national meetings and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and editorials.

Dr. Gao is board certified in Radiation Oncology and sees patients at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Fairfax and at the Potomac Radiation Oncology in Woodbridge. She has has been consistently recognized by Washingtonian Magazine and Northern Virginia Magazine as a Top Doctor in Radiation Oncology by her peers.
